Hmmmm....

Have you ever received a book that you requested and now can't remember why you wanted it to begin with?

I'm a huge fan of BookMooch, where members happily trade books with each other for nothing more than the cost of postage. Today I received a book in the mail that clearly I wanted (it was recommended somewhere by someone at some point), but the cover tells me it might not be my cup of tea. Here, I scanned it for you:

Now you probably can't make out the blurb above the title, so I'll be generous enough to repeat it for you: Her magnificent novel of an age when love ruled kings. Hmmmm.

But wait...there's more on the back cover:

SIR MARK D'ARCHIER
An adventurer from a shattered family, he wielded his shining sword in the service of high destiny.

Now I may be way off base here, but I'm-a-thinkin' the aforementioned sword might be a double-entendre.

  2. And I can't for the life of me remember why it was on my BookMooch wishlist. I know darned well it came from a recommendation (maybe from Amazon, not sure). I'm hoping whoever recommended it will recognize the title here and remind me why it was supposed to be good.

Now you just know I've got to read and review it now that it's here.

Careful what you say or I may just send it to you next --- ha ha.

  3. Ha! Laughing over here! That is so funny.

I remember in high school a friend and I used to go to the public library and laugh at books like that. Ok, so we were geeks! Not that big of a surprise, right? :)

  4. I found where I got the recommendation....off of the Richard III Society's website. It's actually a sequel to another, so I can't read it anyway until I get my grubby paws on the original. Go figure.

  5. bahaha! Love your commentary... And hey, maybe it's a good book with really bad cover art/blurb writing...

  6. It's on my wish list also, and my note to myself just says "Perkin Warbeck" -- the author is one I've read before.

  7. Is that what they called it back then, "shining sword"?

  8. The author wrote a series of books about the Wars of the Roses/early Tudor period. They were republished at some point with these very cheesy looking romance covers but they do not necessarily represent the actual nature of the books. I've read one of them - We Speak No Treason which is about Richard III. I believe The Courts of Illusion is about the reign of Henry VII.

  10. I know we're not supposed to judge books by their covers, but I can't help it! Wielding his sword, indeed! :)
