Vamp it Up

Just so you know, A Reader's Respite has been faithfully chipping away at the charming Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris.

Truly we love, love, love these books.

And we don't normally go for that vampire stuff. But it occurred to us that these books make terribly fun Halloween reads and a great gift for yourself or your best friend who reads as much as you do.

Now if you've caught the HBO series that is based on these books, True Blood, don't be fooled into thinking that the television show is anything at all like the books. Where HBO's version can be more than a little gruesome and bloody, the books are anything but.

Witty and smart, the Sookie Stackhouse books are just plain fun.

Even if you don't normally go for the vamps.

We'll even provide you with a shopping list (tip: you can usually find the paperbacks at Target for $5 or so):

Dead Until Dark
Living Dead in Dallas
Club Dead
Dead to the World
Dead as a Doornail
Definitely Dead
Altogether Dead
From Dead to Worse
Dead and Gone

Happy Reading!

  1. My mom read these books over the summer. I am not too interested in reading them, but every time she had her books out when we were visiting, I was drawn to the covers. LOL They are so sparkly and creative!

  5. I'm in need of a vampire book for a challenge I'm joining and I really didn't want to read Twilight. This sounds like a good alternative, especially since I'm not a vamp type. :)

  6. I think Beth F is doing a reading challenge with these books! I've never read a single one, and I must admit, I do feel left out! I am a bit of a OCD when it comes to series. See, I'd had to set everything aside and neglect everything in my life and read them all!

  7. Sandy, BethFishReads is indeed doing the Sookie Stackhouse challenge :)

I have read the first two in the series and I need to get to the third. I'm contemplating reading it for the readathon this weekend though I'm not entirely convinced of that!

    Glad you are enjoying them.

  13. I just read a book from her other series recently, which I loved, so I was curious about these, but I can't watch the TV show (too gory for me), so I'm glad to hear the books are lighter! (Wow that was a long sentence!)

  14. Amazon has a boxed set of the first 8 for 36 bucks too :) I just read these recently since I too avoid vamp books, but I loved them! I thought the first season was pretty true to book 1 also
