Weekend Gossip Edition

Not being a huge fan of the romance genre, A Reader's Respite took a pass on this year's Romantic Times  Booklover's Convention held in Kansas City.  And it's a damned shame we missed it.  Because we apparently missed the big kerfluffle author E.L. James, who had registered under a different name in order to remain anonymous, walked up to a panel discussion, corrected an error they had made and told them to stop talking about her book.  Twitter lit up like a house of fire.  Good times.

And the Edgar Award for Best Novel goes to......Dennis Lehane.  Hmmmm.  We liked Live by Night, but certainly didn't think it was Edgar material.  Good thing no one invited us to do the judging.

If you love reading in the bathtub, chances are this has happened to you.  Now if you were as smart as an 8 year old girl, it wouldn't:

Check it out here.

Today is Free Comic Book Day.  Bet you let that one slip by you.  Comic book stores around the country are giving away free comic books today.  Really.  If you'd like to find one near you, just visit their website and use the handy-dandy location finder.  Happy reading!

  1. HAHAHA! Yes Ms. James, lesson learned I hope. If you write shitty-ass books and take the risk of showing up at a discussion about romance books incognito (questionable that those things are actually romance...more like dysfunctional sex), you have to be prepared to hear stuff you won't like. I'm a little surprised about Lehane too. There is better stuff out there.

  2. How'd I miss that about E. L. James? I wonder why they'd be discussing her book at a romance book event?

  3. LOL, I saw all the stuff on Twitter about E.L. James. My understanding is that James was friends the panel presenter, and this was a joke that went bad. Even if it was a joke, I thought it sounded awfully arrogant of James. I haven't read her stuff, so I can't comment on her writing, but I'll forever find James distasteful for trying to pretend her 50 Shades books weren't fanfic.

  4. I quite agree. What she has always needed to say is "hey, it was fanfic. Thanks for buying it and reading it. Once in a lifetime shot." I would respect that far more. I read 100 pages into the first book and then gave it away to my mail-lady who wanted to try it, ha ha. No problem with the sex, but the writing really was self-pub, no editor kind of awful. It belonged on the internet on a fan fic site only. But who am I to say, right? I couldn't even get thru the Pulitzer winner this year, ha ha ha.

  5. I don't know a lot about the romance genre. I'm going to assume that BDSM is a sub-genre?

  6. I've just been "off" this year on all the awards. Nothing I thought should win did. At the rate I'm going, Bernadette will win the Orange Prize. Loved the book, but I don't think it's Orange Prize material.

  7. I had absolutely no interest in reading James's books and it looks like that was a solid decision. Even if it was meant as a joke, what a pretentious twit.

That is interesting about Lehane. I liked Shutter Island. I'll have to check this one out and see if I think it deserved the award.

Genius device for bathtub reading. I generally take showers, but if I'm ever reading in the tub, I'll be sure to hook one of those up. Needs a modification for a eReader though. LOL!

  8. I too missed the James stuff -- that's what I get for trying to stay off twitter.
