2012: The Year of the Book Moratorium

A Reader's Respite is pulling out the Big Guns and declaring 2012 to be the Year of the Book Moratorium.  After taking a look at our Goodreads account and discovering that we have 862 books on our shelves to-be-read (Good God!), something drastic had to be done.

How on earth did we ever amass over 800 unread books in this house? Something has to be done.  So what are the terms of our Book Moratorium?  We will not be allowing a single book purchase in 2012.  No more trips to the used book store where we fill five bags full of old paperbacks.  No more random purchases from airport book shops.  No more book excursions on Ebay.  And worst of all, no more "Download Now" for the Kindle.  (Ack, we're dying already!)

Our goal?  To read at least 100 of the books floating around this house.

We're counting on you all to hold us to this.

What are your book resolutions?

  2. Phhhht. All it will take is one lunch 'n' book swap plus a trip to the Tacoma Book Center to squash that plan :D

  3. I took the same pledge.
New Years Day is not finished and I have ordered three books.

    so much for that one.

  4. @Caite - you are not helping here, lol. I downloaded a free kindle book, but since money isn't going out the door, I figure it doesn't count.

    @Misfit - cut.it.out. You're supposed to be supportive here. :P

  5. God love ya. This would be the wise thing for me to do as well, and I do a pretty good job of it, but I have moments of weakness. And that Kindle OMG. Have a glass of wine, read a few reviews, and there I go. Did it last night in fact.

  6. You are definitely NOT alone in buying mass quantities of books that you have no way to read them all. I put myself on a Book Moratorium a couple of years ago when my husband lost his job. So I rediscovered the library. And thanks to recommendations from you, A Reader's Respite, I have read many Elizabeth Chadwick books, which I love! I am so happy you are back to blogging. I have missed you!

  7. To keep you going do not forget the 10000s of free kindle downloads available. All the classics and much more

  8. @ Sandy - okay, the "buy now" button in the Kindle store is just plain evil. As is the Kindle Daily Deal. Evil, evil, evil. Never mix alcohol and the Kindle because bad, bad things will happen. :P

@ Jaqouia - oh I'm so glad you loved Chadwick! The library has become one of my new bestfriends, LOL. I'm planning on re-reading a lot of Chadwick's older books this year....they are my comfort reads. :)

@ Mel - oh the Kindle freebie...sometimes I'm so grateful for them (at least, the classics) and then sometimes I'll grab one and it's horrid, lol. There are some lovely illustrated editions of Austen that are free. Love the illustrated ones with my new kindle fire. :)

  9. Whew. I feel much better about my 535 books sitting on my shelves. I don't think I can quit purchasing books cold turkey though. Good luck!

  10. I am impressed with your resolve! I have put myself on a moratorium for the first quarter of the year - but I fully anticipate major withdrawal symptoms come April 1st :)

  11. Huh. Well, good luck with that. I admire it but know that it is very very difficult to pull off -- especially when you realize your favorite author is releasing a new book.

Perhaps you can purchase a book ONLY if you get a gift certificate or something. (And then make your family swear they will give you gift certificates to books stores for your birthday and all holidays -- inluding Groundhog Day.)

    Good luck!

  12. @ Michelle - oh, I have far more than 832. 832 is just as far as I got in the categorizing/counting business. Ugh.

@Molly and @Jenners - I should have mentioned on there, the moratorium is more not spending any money on books this year. Which pretty much equates to no books coming in. But I welcome gifts and libraries and kindle freebies. :) Probably won't be doing much of those, but the Amazon wishlist for my birthday ought to cover it.

  13. Ummm...yeah. Good luck with that!

I know when I give myself a moratorium I will undoubtedly be buying a book within the week!
