Even-Bigger-Than-Yesterday's-News

Blogging is a funny thing.  When A Reader's Respite announced yesterday that the blog would be retiring, we felt a huge sense of relief...after all, writing snark is more difficult than one might think.  It's hard to stay snarky on a daily basis.

You might imagine our complete and utter surprise when we awoke this morning to an inbox FULL OF LETTERS expressing disappointment in our "retirement."  We were shocked.  We thought it was a hoax.  We had to drink a pot of coffee and ponder the meaning of all this.

Well, we are now well into our second pot of coffee and have decided that a few blog posts full of snark each week isn't going to hurt any of us.  For those of you who took the time to write a letter, A Reader's Respite's cold, black heart is truly touched.    And our blog secretary tells us he would be thrilled to come out of retirement and have some work for a change (since his film career clearly isn't going anywhere these days).

Our new online lit magazine, The Lit Asylum, will forge ahead as planned and we hope you all get a chance to visit.  But for the snarky, evil commentary that it would be UNPROFESSIONAL of us to feature in a genuine, lit magazine, you'll have to keep visiting us here at A Reader's Respite.

For now, we're going to see if the enormous amount of hype surrounding the release of Erin Morgenstern's new novel, The Night Circus, was genuine or all a bunch of smoke and mirrors.  The Huffington Post called the book "the next Harry Potter," (Really?  Are you trying to kill the book before it's even released?) which gave us a horrible case of the shudders.  Still, we couldn't help but be vaguely interested in a book that garnered such a huge amount of pre-publication publicity targeting a Harry Potter and Twilight audience while earning Ms. Morgenstern a six-figure advance.  This is a big gamble for Doubleday....think it will pay off?

We hope so and we're hoping we love the book....anything to get the bad taste of Philippa Gregory's new release, The Lady of the Rivers, out of our mouth.  Ewww.  But that's a story for another day....

  4. Oh thank God. More Viggo and Vagina Clown Cars please.

As for The Night Circus, I'm pretty excited about it. However, I shall NOT be listening to it on audio because it is narrated by Jim Dale, of the Harry Potter audios. I recently listened to another audio with his narration and I couldn't get HP out of my head and had to turn it off.

  9. Happy you'll still be here! But you knew that. And what's a day without Viggo? Except I was sure he was going to be looking for new employment and I was planning to lure him away.

  13. Yay! I was so excited to see this post! Yours is one of my favorite snarky blogs. And I can't believe that you still read PG's books when you seem to loathe her writing, yet I'm so happy to see that more PG bashing is coming our way. ;)

  14. Thank Goodness :) :) :)

You know this is the best news in like forever :)

I thin I love your snarky posts and your beautiful assistant :)

The Night Circus - seriously it is awfully too much to mention HP, I ope t doesn't kill the book for everyone.

  15. Glad to know you're still around! :)

And "the next Harry Potter" does THE NIGHT CIRCUS a disservice. It's not Harry Potter, but it *is* a super book.

  16. So glad you're back; I really missed the blog this summer.
And more on Gregory? I have not read anything of The Cousin's War, mostly as Tudor+some Elizabethan+Restoration= 3 eras of British history to learn about...have not been interested in another era so soon! But I did enjoy the discussion spawned earlier this year by Wideacre!

  17. I have been so out of the loop. First I went on vacation during the first half of August and then when I got back, I launched another blog (a horror review site) and I have been busy planning events for that since Fall is the official 'scary' season. So, imagine my surprise and shock when I read this post as I was (trying to) catching up on reading blogs! I'm so glad that you decided to keep going. If I would have known, you would have had a letter from me in your inbox as well! How could you even consider stopping with Viggo as your secretary. LOL! I'm going to go check out your new site now. Again, so happy you're sticking around. =O)
