Despite our protests that we would never, ever give in to modern-day technological trickery, the unthinkable has happened at Chez Reader's Respite:
Yes, A Reader's Respite has been Kindled.
In our defense, we did not part with our own hard-earned money for this Amazonian Devil Device. Rather, Mr. Reader's Respite parted with his hard-earned money and then gifted it to yours truly, ostensibly to make up for the fact that today was our birthday and there has to be some recompense for getting old.
Now before y'all start ooooohing and aaaaaaahing over Mr. RR's generosity, we feel compelled to tell you this was entirely self-serving for him. For the mere price of an Amazonian Devil Device, Mr. RR hopes to
a) never again have to schlepp 1000+ hardcover books across the country in our next household move, and
b) get lucky.
In the meantime, we admit that the Amazonian Devil Device has cast it's evil spell upon the household. We can't put the damned thing down.
So it does seem necessary to get some housecleaning done around here while we still can.....first up: some book winners!
Y'all know the drill.....zap me some addresses!
And speaking of contests, here's one for you: first person to correctly guess the very first book A Reader's Respite downloaded to the Amazonian Devil Device wins a $25 gift certificate to Amazon!
Congrats! Hubby should get lucky! No idea about the book. Moby Dick? LOL, really no idea but hope you have fun with it!
ReplyDeleteOh, how cool is he, Michele. All I can say is... ring~a~ding. Ding. lol.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners ~ don't leave her hangin'. lol.
LOL, men always have ulterior motives when gifting, don't they? ;) Lucky you though! I hope you enjoy that Kindle. And happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteZombies! I guess Zombies! I am also quite excited about The Glister. I'll e-mail you in a minute. But first, I am very interested in what you have to say about your Kindle. In fact, I'd like for you to give posted updates on how it is working for you. I just mentioned to my husband last night that I might like it for my birthday, but I'm not sure...I leave for a trip to Poland in June. Last time I went, I seriously challenged the 50 pound limit on all of our bags because I drug probably 20 books with me (including the full set of Harry Potter) to keep myself occupied. This would be the answer to my problem, yes? I just hate being a slave to Amazon.
ReplyDeleteI love your naming it the ADD. I intend to use that and credit you going forward. As for your gift, I hope you enjoy it. I have used my friends and just can't seem to enjoy it as much as a regular book. Happy Birthday and I haven't a clue what you would have gotten for your first book unless it was a copy of Harry Potter (I think you're participating in Smash's HP Revisited challenge.)
ReplyDeleteCongrats and happy birthday!!! I have no clue if that is your photo or a stock photo of the Kindle. I'll pretend it's your photo and say Outliers.
ReplyDeleteIf I don't win a Kindle I don't think I'll be getting one. I have such a love/hate relationship with the idea. Yay on having lots of books in small space and easily obtainable. Boo on the Amazon tie. Plus I understand that you can't read the free ebooks from the library on it.
Sooooo. Hummmm. I don't know. I'm sure I'll cave one of these days. After all I own 1 cassette walkman, 2 CD walkmans, and 3 MP3 players -- all just for books.
Firstly Happy Birthday! Secondly, someone is definitely getting lucky tonight (or at leastthey would be if they lived in my house!).
ReplyDeleteI really want an e-reader, so I am turning green with jealousy.
Happy Birthday and congrats on getting your Kindle! My sister got one and has been raving about it. I've been using the app on my Itouch, but that's about it. Tell me can you read the Kindle outside in the sun, can you see the screen okay? (I notice on my Itouch you can't). That's seriously important for summer reading for me outside! Congrats again!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I've had a Kindle for about 2 weeks now and I love mine too. I don't know the title, but I would guess you downloaded historical fiction.
ReplyDeleteI just know that someday I will give in. I won't be able to help it.
ReplyDeleteLezlie
Ooh, it's pretty! I hope hubby does get lucky!
ReplyDeleteCongrats and happy birthday. Good thing it wasn't lunch time when I looked at this, might have had to run off to Dicks for a burger and fries....
ReplyDeleteAlaine - Perhaps my mind is in the gutter, but context considered, your guess had me laughing out loud! ;)
ReplyDeleteNow, as for the ADD, I'll be posting tidbits about it as I go but as a warning: I have no love of e-readers, so I might be a tad more critical than the average reader.
Now, as for Sandy. Not only do I owe you a book, but also a GIFT CERTIFICATE! Dang, how do you DO that????? It's just spooky, lady. Yes, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was indeed the first book downloaded since my hard copy was backordered from Amazon, lol!
Happy Birthday! Very smart gift choice from Mr. RR!
ReplyDeleteCarey
Happy birthday! What a thoughtful hubby.

Rats, I was going to guess PP&Z. Congratulations to Sandy! (And I hope you're enjoying your Kindle! Happy Birthday!)
ReplyDeleteOohh Kindle! I have such mixed feelings on this...On one hand, it could be really convenient and handy to have (and not have to lug around several books for a vacation or whatever) BUT you can't use a library for Kindle books (unless they come up with a netflix for Kindle kind of thing...) and you wouldn't get to actually HOLD a book and turn the pages.
ReplyDeleteMy hubs recently revealed to me that he got my birthday present back in February (bday isn't until June) and it sounds like he spend a lot...so I'm kind of worried and excited that it might be a kindle. Worried because I don't know that I really want one, and excited because maybe I do...Please post your thoughts on it as you begin using it!
My husband wants one, too. In the worst way...
ReplyDeleteTell us what you think of it in a few days.
No idea about the book, tho.
Hooray for Mr. RR...nice birthday choice. I hope all his dreams come true.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Not you too ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I'm jealous of the Kindle.
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous. Enjoy, and happy birthday!
ReplyDelete"A Reader's Respite has been Kindled"<-- Love this line lol. Happy birthday (thank you for the Delaney book by the way, it arrived!)!
ReplyDeleteUmmmm...is the first book Outliers?
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats! I'm a Kindler and I LOVE IT! It is quite a nifty little device and I'm sure you (as a frequent traveler, yes?) will get so much use out of it! Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy!
GAH! I'm trying to hold out, but every time I see a post like this I weaken...
ReplyDeleteyou have gone over to the dark side.... ;-)
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing the Kindle for a while. Maybe my husband will be as generous when my birthday rolls around!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I sooo want an Amazonian Devil Device! *jealous drooling*
