Must. Have. This. Book.

Release Date: June 2009

From the Publisher:

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you’d actually want to read.

JANE AUSTEN is the author of Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and other masterpieces of English literature.

SETH GRAHAME-SMITH once took a class in English literature. He lives in Los Angeles.

So.....

Would this be Chick Lit or Dick Lit?

Just wonderin'.

  1. I've already got it pre-ordered. I'm so excited to see how this book is as I'm a fan of great literature and zombies. Can you really go wrong when you combine the two?

  2. Oh my goodness...you so make me laugh! Dick lit or chick lit...I think it's a toss-up with this one!

  3. This is SOOOO totally a movie. I'm down. Let's all buy it and read it!

Plus, I ALSO once took a class in English literature and hung out at the Los Angeles Airport - me and the author have a lot in common.

  4. BTW, this is totally a combo between Chick and Dick lit. Chicks and Dicks do go well together so it should be a good thing. :D

  5. That's it. I'm pre-ordering this book. I think we should form an online book club for this book alone.

And Nely...bwahahahaha...yes, I suppose they do go well together!

  11. So I just checked it out and it doesn't look like it's available until May. And just for shits and giggles... I pre-ordered it.

  12. yes. yes. yes. yes. yes. yes. Can you patent the process for adding zombies to classic literature? I hope not because this could open a whole new literary genre and every book at Project Gutenberg should be updated. Hamlet, Zombie of Denmark; Undead Expectations; The Zombie Kama Sutra; Zombie Adventures in Wonderland; The Picture of Dorian Gray that Hungers for Brains;... thanks for leading me to this book!

  13. That is simply genius...how did no one think of this just now? Brilliant. I say you start a sort of demented book club for books of this nature and this can be our first book. I'm so in like Flynn. and now that I read everyone's comments I see that most of them had the same idea! I also agree with Nely...fabulous movie idea. Tim Burton perhaps?

  14. Oh and, there should be a new genre...Zombie Lit.

  15. Yes, I pre-ordered it. Two copies, actually since I'm thinking it would make a fun giveaway.

And yes, this should be a new genre. We may very well be witnessing the birth of a new and entertaining form of literature.

I have dibs on rewriting Wuthering Heights in which Heathcliff is actually a werewolf. I could make millions (of cents, anyway).

And I'm still stalking the.effing.librarian. Just in secret. I'm told that announcing my stalking intentions to the world was not the smartest plan.

This is "confused Ch/D-ick lit" or maybe just Ick Lit?

  18. The more I hear of it, the more I want to read it too! (though I'm not dying to!) This does look pretty clever, though it is not the first I've seen of P&P and zombies, I have seen it done before, a few times, in P&P fanfiction online at austen.com

LOL! Dick lit, never heard that phrase before!

  19. I've just pre-ordered it. I can't resist.

  20. Jeez. I go make dinner and see what I miss out on! I'm at the end of the discussion! When I was searching online a few days ago for the book cover to P&P for my review, I saw this and thought "What the hell? Elizabeth has gum disease!" I just shake my head. And I completely agree...adding zombies to Wuthering Heights can only help it!

  21. What an interesting and potentially explosive combination! I can't even imagine how this would read!

The cover alone seems worth the price of admission! That is perhaps the creepiest cover I've seen lately -- besides the cover of Artie Lange's "Too Fat To Fish."

  22. Oh...and I never heard "Dick Lit" but I like it a lot!

  23. I was going to suggest sick lit, but Beth's is better.

And yes, this is just screaming for an online read-along.

  24. That cover is cool! I think this is a must read!

  25. LMAOOO!!!! I love it! I want it! I think this is a brilliant hermaphroditic mix of chick and dick lit.

  26. The cover seriously creeps me out. Which, of course, is the whole point. Definitely going to check this one out, but it will probably stay face-down on the nightstand!

(I am a total wimp when it comes to zombies. Vampires, no problem. Werewolves, I'm there. Mummies, awesome. But zombies? Zombies freak me out.)
