Review: I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, by Amy Sedaris

Rating: 5 out of 5 Spatulas (as cookbooks go)

Book Source: a sister who finally got a present right

Okay, so I'm not a culinary genius. That's why I throw the occasional medieval recipe at you. If I'm going to learn to cook, I figure I'd better start at the beginning and medieval times seem a good place to start.

But Amy Sedaris has come to my rescue with what I am calling the anti-cookbook. What is an anti-cookbook, you ask? An anti-cookbook contains not only recipes, but also plenty of non-cooking related snarky stuff that makes me laugh and distracts me from the actual act of cooking. Things like:

Gift Suggestions for Early Menopause
A pin made from a broken china plate
Drapes or curlers
Hand mirror
Earring tree
Rose lotion
Rolling pin

Okay, so this kind of humor is not for everyone, but the recipes do look good. Please note that I haven't actually tried one of these recipes because the other stuff is too entertaining. By other stuff I mean things Cooking Under the Influence:
If one of my parties was pulled over and administered a breath analyzer it would spend the weekend in jail. That's because at my parties, alcohol and drugs are encouraged, in moderation, and by "moderation," I of course mean that whatever my guests want to put in their throats is fine by me; I'm not here to judge.

If information like that isn't enough to grab you, the really cool pictures will....

Aren't you all glad I find this stuff for you? I've got about a half-dozen friends who are going to be getting this book for Christmas (okay, so I don't actually have a half-dozen friends. But the few I have now know what Santa's bringing).

  1. I really love the cover of this book. I think it is very inviting.

Love the pictures and the colors and I think it will make a very good Christmas present.

You should make one of th recipes someday and put up pictures on the blog and let us know how it went.

  3. This does sound like a fun gift book (your sister was good to get it for you!). It reminds me of a book I recently reviewed *Eat Me* by Kenny Shopsin; similar "snarky" humor with some recipes included.
